California kids can suffer injuries at school

Schools in California have been back in session for a few weeks now, and our children have adjusted back to the daily grind. As parents, we're happy that they're happy in their environment.

Still, we do have some concerns: keeping our kids injury-free at school.

There actually are a number of ways kids can be injured at school.

  1. The National Program for Playground Safety says that every year, more than 200,000 children suffer injuries on playgrounds – including school playgrounds. The group advises all schools and other groups that operate playgrounds to provide proper supervision, design playgrounds appropriate for the age of the user, put the proper surfacing under and around playground equipment to cushion potential falls and keep all equipment in good working order.
  2. A study from the University of Denver estimated there were approximately 1.3 million injuries stemming from high school sports in the 2012-13 school year.
  3. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a report that stated among students in grades nine through 12, 7 percent reported that they had been threatened or injured with a weapon, 8 percent said they were in a fight at school, and nearly 20 percent said they had been bullied on school grounds in the previous year.

When it comes to premises liability claims against government entities, such as public schools, there are government immunity laws that create a higher standard of proof. But don't prejudge your case. If your child has been injured on school grounds and your family has a pile of medical bills, it is worth a call to a qualified California attorney to discuss how to recover your losses.
