Girl injured by dog bites in Riverside County

Dogs may be a man's best friend, but they can be the worst enemy of an unsuspecting person. Wild animals are hard to blame for aggression, but domesticated animals are a different matter and California law relies on owners to be responsible to save lives and health.

A 4-year-old girl was attacked by a dog one year older while she played in a relative's yard in Riverside County. Investigators could not initially be sure if the dog escaped its kennel or was let out by the owner.

The dog then charged the girl in an unprovoked attack, according to a spokesperson of the Riverside County Animal Services department. The dog's household was already known to the department, as the owner was cited for having too many dogs on the property and may have been illegally breeding dogs there.

"Dog owners need to be extra vigilant with their pets when children are present," the director of the Animal Services Department said. "We are always especially troubled when toddlers are seriously injured." The victim may require facial reconstruction surgery to fully recover from the attack.

Owners of dangerous dogs are responsible for their behavior, whether or not the animals are recognized as dangerous by the state of California. A person may face criminal charges if he or she is responsible for an animal's attack, and the victim or relatives of the victim of an attack may sue in civil court.

An attorney may be helpful during the process of deciding to sue and filing the proper documents with a California court. Consider consulting a lawyer if you or a loved one has been injured by an domesticated animal.
