Motorcycles offer Californians a wide variety of benefits. All it takes for many to wish they were on two wheels instead of four is a few minutes stuck in a freeway jam or caught bumper-to-bumper in city traffic. Fuel efficiency and a thrilling ride round out the advantages of a bike.
There are also a number of disadvantages, mostly related to safety, when it comes to motorcycles and bicycles. The smaller vehicles are more difficult to see, increasing the chance that a driver will carelessly strike a bike in traffic. The lack of protection that bikes offer also complicates collisions.
The California Highway Patrol says a motorcycle rider is lucky to be alive after an accident on the 91 Freeway in Orange County. The biker was hit before dawn on a recent Monday morning when a driver headed the wrong direction on the divided highway near an interchange with the 55 Freeway.
The motorcycle was heavily damaged in the head-on collision, and the car went on to crash into a concrete barrier. The rider was transported to a local hospital for care. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident as a potential DUI accident, and it is still unclear how the driver ended up driving the wrong way on the freeway.
Victims of motorcycle collisions and the survivors of bike crash fatalities have the right to seek financial restitution through settlements, jury verdicts and other outcomes of a civil court case. A lawyer can assist victims and their families with gathering evidence, finding the parties at fault and filing the appropriate documents to forward a case.
