On Friday, May 6, 2016, a multiple vehicle accident occurred on I-5, near Coalinga. The Fresno County big rig crash took place near Highway 198, and ended in the death of one victim, at about 10:57 AM.
A 2009 Freightliner Fed Ex truck was driving on Interstate 5 northbound. The tractor-trailer was traveling at about 55 mph as it approached traffic which had stopped because of a freeway closure.

The driver of the semi did not see the stopped vehicles in time. He veered to the left to try to avoid a collision, but was unable to.
The big rig smashed into a white 2014 Nissan Frontier truck, driven by 18 year old James Alonzo Stewart, of Ridgecrest. It also struck a Mercedes S550.
Upon impact the Mercedes crashed into the center median of the freeway, and the Nissan was pushed into the back of a Toyota Prius. The Prius ended up off the highway and down an embankment.
The FedEx truck continued to push the pickup forward, until it smashed into another semi.
Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. His 17 year old female passenger suffered major injuries. She was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center, in Fresno, for treatment.
The driver of the Prius sustained moderate injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
Two other people were injured as well.
