On Tuesday, February 2, 2016, a semi truck accident led to the deaths of three people, in Fresno County. The fatal van vs. gravel rig collision happened near Reedley, at around 8:15 AM. The victims have been identified.
Two California Conservation Corps vans, were traveling eastbound on South Avenue, to a water conservation turf removal project, in Dinuba. The first van stopped at the stop sign at Buttonwillow Avenue.
The van then entered the intersection, where it was broadsided by a gravel truck with two fully-loaded trailers. The big rig had been driving at 55 mph at the time of the collision.
One of the six occupants in the CCC van was ejected. He or she was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other victims died inside the van.
The three victims have been identified as; Justin Vanmeter, 21, Rhonda Shackelford, 20, both of Clovis, and Serena Guadarrama, 18, of Fresno.
A fourth victim sustained major injuries and was medi-flighted to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The two other occupants in the van suffered minor to moderate injuries and were taken by ambulance to Kaweah Delta Medical Center, in Visalia.
The Peterbilt rig’s driver, a Reedley man, 54, was not injured.
