August 9, 2018- A tanker truck accident occurred near Lemoore, on Thursday. The Kings County rollover big rig crash happened on 19 1/2 Avenue, at about 11:30 PM.
The driver of a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, Daniel Scott Campos, was headed south on Highway 165, near Santa Fe Grade. The Pontiac swerved into the other lane and sideswiped a 2003 Freightliner semi truck, that was northbound on the highway. The big rig was driven by Kanwer Waraich, of Ceres.
After the Grand Prix hit the semi, it spun out and another Freightliner, driven by Santiago Sandoval, of Modesto, smashed into it. Sandoval's tractor-trailer went off the road, and ran into a telephone pole, then caught fire.
Daniel Campos sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment.
Waraich and Sandoval are reported to not have been injured.
David Blanchet, who is the Vice President of Paramount Farms, suffered major injuries, and was airlifted to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.Jose Martinez also sustained serious injuries and was taken to Kern Medical Center.
The semi was dangling off the overpass above Highway 99. The freeway was closed, because of plummeting debris.It was said that 2-3 other cars were involved in the collision, but no one was hurt.
Caltrans will come in to inspect the overpass to make sure it is safe to drive on before vehicles can use that part of the highway again.
Officers reported that five people in the truck were trapped inside until emergency crews were able to pull them out.
Those involved in the accident suffered minor to moderate injuries. The cab of the semi swung across the slow lane knocking three cars off the road, over an embankment. The big rig hit a Mazda 3, driven by Byron Aranda of Manteca. The it crashed into a 2009 Toyota Prius, driven by Norma Reed of Alamo. Lastly it collided with a Ford Ranger, driven by Adolfo Lopez of Salida before also veering over the embankment.The big rig and the other three vehicles came to rest along a chain link fence that separates the freeway from the railroad tracks.Lopez was the only one hurt in the crash. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his minor injuries.
It is reported that traffic was backed up, because of the accident, all the way to Manteca. The slow lane of the highway was shut down until 12:15 PM.The CHP said that drugs and alcohol are not contributing factors in the crash. The impact from the crash caused the trailer of the semi, that was full of sand and gravel, to overturn onto the shoulder of the road. The force of the impact was so great that it crushed the cab of the big rig and killed the driver, 76-year-old Charles Edward Lawson.
The driver of the car, Josue A. Hernandez was critically injured and airlifted to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.It is reported that Hernandez was not trying to pass anyone.
