7 steps to take when dealing with road rash

A serious motorcycle accident can lead to road rash. While it often occurs on the arms and legs, it can happen anywhere. When you hit the pavement and slide at high speeds, even if you do not suffer broken bones or other serious injuries, you can absolutely do significant harm to your skin.

It's incredibly painful and many people end up with permanent scars. To help you deal with it, here are seven steps you can take:

  1. Start off by washing your hands. You never want to transfer any bacteria or debris to the wound.
  2. Next, wash off the wound itself with warm water. Scrubbing can make it worse, so simply spray the area with water and lightly touch it with a towel.
  3. Get a pair of tweezers and make sure no foreign material -- rocks, dirt, etc -- sticks to your skin.
  4. To help it start healing right away, coat the area in an antibiotic ointment. This can reduce the odds of infection and scarring.
  5. Wrap the road rash in a bandage. This helps keep it clean, stops the bleeding and prevents it from getting worse.
  6. Take off the bandage every day and put on a new one. Take a moment to wash the rash again and apply more ointment when you do this. Make it part of your daily routine.
  7. Watch out for drainage, pus, swelling, redness, bleeding or increased pain. These things can mean it is infected and not healing properly.

Road rash is one of the worst parts of a motorcycle accident. Make sure you find out if you can seek compensation after the crash, especially if you are not at fault.
