Speeding: A common form of reckless driving

Many California drivers are in a hurry when they get behind the wheel, and sometimes, the need to get somewhere quickly can lead to the decision to speed. At some point, most drivers are likely guilty of speeding, even if it is only a few miles over the speed limit.

Speed limits exist for a reason, and driving too fast can have detrimental consequences. In fact, speeding is a form of reckless driving, and it is one of the most common reasons for car accidents. If you suffered injuries in an accident caused by a speeding driver, you could have grounds to move forward with a civil claim against the liable party.

A risky behavior, no matter how fast

Every person is responsible for the choices he or she makes behind the wheel, even if it involves driving just slightly over the speed limit. Many people underestimate the serious nature of speeding, failing to see how hazardous it is. Speeding is dangerous for the following reasons:

  • A speeding driver is more likely to lose control of his or her vehicle.
  • A collision at a high rate of speed reduces the effectiveness of safety equipment, such as seatbelts.
  • When speeding, a car will require more time to come to a complete stop.
  • Motor vehicle collisions in which one vehicle was speeding often involve serious injuries.

While many people speed because they are in a hurry to arrive at their destination, it could also be a form of aggressive driving. Regardless of the reason a person was speeding, you know that victims of this type of negligent behavior do not have to suffer alone.

If speed played a role in your accident, you might have a rightful claim to financial compensation. Through a personal injury claim, you could recover your losses related to the collision, including medical bills, recovery needs and more.

Learning about your legal options

Victims of negligent or reckless driving may find it helpful to seek an evaluation of their case as soon as possible after an accident. While taking legal action cannot reverse what happened to you or mitigate the physical pain you are facing, it can allow you to move forward with your life after a traumatic incident.

If you believe you may have grounds for a claim, you have no time to lose in taking the appropriate steps to protect your rights and your long-term interests.
